The People's Deliberations: Context and Concept of Rousseau's Political Thought

Situating the concepts of the Social Contract within the context of Geneva's history, the book shows how Rousseau subverts the language of the sovereignty of the people to authorize the people’s deliberations. The concept of the general will relies on an underlying conception of political judgment, which the book reconstitutes. As a complement, the Letters Written from the Mountain shed light on the place of civic contestation in Rousseau's thought. As a counter-democracy develops through the rejection of spokespersons and representatives, Rousseau's political thought remains relevant for our times.
